  An Outline for Lecture on Learning Spoken English

  1.Why should we learn spoken English?

  To communicate with people to make us understood/to understand the others perfectly (purpose)

  The medium we use to achieve this purpose effectively:live, direct, colorful, concise, full of feelings (uh-uh, uh-huh, uh-oh, oops, ouch, Gosh, Gee )

  To promote one's image (job interview/visa interview/intra-office communication )


  2.What's wrong with ur way of learning spoken English?

  Several years of learning, butFive aspects of English learning: 
  listening/speaking/reading/writing/translating

  English learning as knowledge obtaining vs. English learning as skill acquiring (Zhuang Ziˇs remarks: life is momentary, but knowledge is boundless; to conquer the boundless with a bound, what a terrible mistake we are making.)

  3.How did we Chinese learn English in the past?

  A historical retrospect:

  a see the attached Lecture Outline for ¨From the Devil's Talk to the Human Talk...

  Free discussion/English corner/listen to the radio/listen to the tape/watch English movies/recite articles/talk to English speaking people Good: ¨environment〃Bad: cannot have a complete control over the environment/hard to"standardize〃 one's English

  4.Why should we change our conventional perspective of learning spoken English?

  Language determines meanings?  Absolutely NOT! A baby tries to say "dad〃 or"grandson〃 

  Zhao Yuanren's joke (old ladies from various countries)

  Think in American English!

  Way of thinking determines meanings!

  "broken English〃 will work!

  a.somewhere /anywhere
  b.five talks, four beauties, and three lovers
  c.love message sent from the corners of oneˇs eyes
  d.send/receive telegrams

  5.The skills to be acquired

   To define /to explain /to describe/ to express in idioms/ to interpret /to guess

  a.To do presentation 

  b.Zhu Tong‘s example: how to interpret (try to have a better understanding of Chinese)  /Beijing Ren’s talks.
