* * 1-20JJ and others

GR 2003-01-21 17:00:43

Just finished it today. Scored q5*,v3*,total 7**. Benefit a lot from this forum and really want to contribute as much as I can.
Unfortunately I could not remember most of the problems exactly. To avoid misleading, I will give some general idea of these problems.
Math: generally speaking, it is not hard. Doing all the JJ problems is enough to solve those difficult ones. I once doubted my performance during test because I did not encounter many hard questions. Given my math score, I think I should be doing ok.
I met some JJ problems:
1. DS: whether x<0 a) x^3<0 b) x^3+x+1=0
This is an old JJ and is debated much. I think the answer is D. a) is obvious. b) can be rewritten as x(x^2+1)=-1. SInce x^2+1>0, x should be less than zero. Welcome any comments.
2. PS old jj: a couple have four children, ask the prob of two girls and two boys
3. DS also old jj: a line passing through A(5,a) ask the sign of slope, given a<>5 a) pass b(a,5). Choose A
4. That one : repair defective components, every worker takes the same number out of a box which contains 88 or 86? in total and the left is 2 less than the number of the workers.
Others:
1. n children can be seated in one table with 3 and each other table with 4; or one table with three and each other table with 5. Ask if each other table seated with 6,
and the left for the one table is less than 5, how many is it? Given n is between 10 and 40, exclusively. My answer is 5. because n is 23.

2. tell you the coordinates of two points and these two points are the endpoints of a diagonal of a square. Ask the perimeter of the square. Need to know how to calculate the distance bw two points then it's easy to solve.

3.DS: a,b,c,d are positive numbers. Ask whether (a/b) > square root (c/d)
a) a^2 >c,b) b^2 >d

4 DS: ask if x+y>0
a)x/(x+y) >0 b) y/(x+y)>0

5.PS: bob saved a portion of his income this year and spent all the rest. For each dollar he saved this year, he can get 1+r dollar next year. If bob does not have any income next year and the savings is the only money he has, how much is the proportion he saved this year in terms of r if the money he have next year is half the money he spent this year

Other problems include:
DS: calculate the earning of a sales agent over a week; the total salary of last week which includes overtime pay. I remember I saw similiar ones somewhere. I couldn't remember the details but they are not hard.

Verbal:
cr: a drug can be used to some cancer. SInce this cancer is less common, to test this drug, a large number of people will be used and therefore many people will suffer the adverse side effect of this drug. Ask the assumption:
some choices are little confusing:
1. the people who are very likely to contract this cancer is hard to identify in advance.
2. drug test must employ a large number of people in order to be effective
3. drugs that can be effective to some cancer have adverse side effect
I chose 3 but not very sure.
cr: children who are allergic to some chemical used in school are sent to the nurse office more than ten years ago. Therefore, it must because the chemical is used more or because children are more vulnerable to this chemical than ten years ago. Ask assumption.
I chose children who get allergic now are more likely to be sent to nurse office than ten years ago.
cr: some school offers on-line course as well as traditional course. If take a withdrawal as a failure for the course, the grade of these two kinds of course are almost the same on average. Ask what must be true:
I chose the students enrolled in the online course who did not withdraw did better, on average, than students enrolled in traditional course.

RC: I dont think I did well in RC. I met the first rc from the second question, taking more time than I planned.
I remember the first one is about a forrestation of a land. Some evidence shows it used to be forrest rich. Then someone gave an interpretation which says the climate there decides the current pattern but the author does not agree much(some question here)
Second one is about US economy: two explanations about debt(see old JJ)
Third is about cleaner and client in the sea. Whether they benefit each other? List some experimental evidence...
I give up the forth one.

SC: i worried this part the most. But frankly I think it is not as hard as I expected. OG is very good. Some choices can be easily excluded. GIven time limit, sometimes I just picked the one I felt the best and others just do not look right. I dont mean we can bid on guess. I think as long as you're familiar with OG, and the style of ETS, your feeling in the test can be followed, esp when you need to make a decision quickly.

AI: business can not be successful by conforming to conventional practice or ways of thinking
AA: a company wants to follow a leading coffee company's strategy to promote its own brand of coffee.

I feel having a template is important and you also need to practice it well. I should have had one. Time is short and it is hard to come up with a very well written essay within the limit, at least for me. It is also a good suggestion to write it down on the scratch paper before you get started.

Above is all I can think of. It is not easy to go through the preparation process. I, personally, do appreciate a lot the help and encouragment I got from this forum. Whenever I felt blue, I became cheerful after visiting here. You all make me feel not alone to go through this process, let alone all the experience, feeling, JJ shared by those who either made it or need to fight again. I think this is the power of solidarity.
Though I get over with this, I think I will come here from time to time. I wish you all the best luck!
