Argument 99.

The following appeared in a memo from the economic minister of the small country Paucia.
“ using a newly developed variety of seed, farmers in our neighboring country Abundia produced 80 percent more rice last year than in any previous year. To increase the income of farmers in our own country, we should encourage them to cultivate this new variety of rice rather than some of their traditional crops. Such high yields of rice will also improve our country’s balance of trade by enabling us to begin exporting it.”

Outline and Analysis:

The assumption of this arguer:
With the newly developed variety of seed, which has been practiced in the neighboring country Abundia, Paucia can gain more farming product than
traditional methods do, so as to both increasing the income of farmers and
improving the balance of trade by exporting it.
Reasoning flaws of this arguer:
1. a false analogy with its neighboring country Abundia. The farming
product mentioned in this argument is rice, which can be only planted under
limited conditions, not provided by this arguer. So, we are suffering from the lack of information of the different geographical and climate situations in the country Abundia and Paucia. Furthermore, this minister
did not provide the information of the exporting situation of the rice
which are produced under the new variety of seed in its neighboring
country, A, which can tell us its prospect and give a reliable and sound
judgment.
2. the stability of the newly developed method mentioned in this argument.
There are some unconventional means which can dramatically increase the
product of food, which also not gained the worldwide configuration because
of its unknown influence of human healthy. Actually, there are more and
more genetic modified food, saying as a better way to meet the need of
people’s food demanding, available in local market, which is a new
invention and means it did not have long-term testing system.
3. lacking the information about the sources of income in the local rural
place. As we all known, the role and definition of farmer have been greatly
updated. Farming is no longer the only task of farmers but fishing,
foresting, working in big cities and providing services, which is a real tendency these days. Assuming in P, if the main task of farmers is not farming, which usually means lower income, for instance, as in some middle east countries farmers are really rich which is since the fertile oil output in these areas.
4. the minister states P is a small country, so, will it be effective to balance the trade by exporting rice if its geographical condition is not suitable to farming it, for instance, it locates in desert?
5. moreover, if in P, the food demand is very high and the increased yields still can not meet the needs of its own citizens, how to discuss the issue of exporting food?
6. testing standard for this food. Could it meet the testing standard in its target exporting countries?
