1. What will you study in the United States? What will you do in USA? I will pursue my Ph.D. degree in Optics at University of AAA, the best optical research center in the United States, or even in the world. 2. What is your purpose for the visa? I need an F-one visa to pursue a doctor degree in the University of AAA. I plan to finish my study in five years and then come back to China. 3. What is your major? In what aspect of your major will you study? Could you tell me something about your major (specialty)? What is your specialty? My major is optical engineering at Tsinghua University, and I will pursue my Ph.D. degree in Optics at University of AAA. My graduate research at Tsinghua University focuses on Optical Image Recognition, which uses volume holographic storage and wavelet compression. (Volume holographic storage is the next generation of data storage, which provides large digital storage capacity, fast data transfer speeds, and short access times. Its fundamental mechanism is storing the three-dimension information in some special crystals through optical methods.) (Wavelet technology is also a new technology for information analysis . It can freely analyze the frequency of a certain signal according to the requirements. So it is called the 'mathematical icroscope' and is often used to compress digital data and filter signals). As a rule of Opitcs of AAA, my specialty will be determined after one year after I study there. At that time, I can freely select my tutor and research program. And probably I will select optical storage or optical communication as my special area. 4. What do you want to study in USA? I will study Optics at University of AAA. 见上一句话。 5. Why do you like your major? I have been doing research works on optics for more than 3 years since I was only a junior student. And I have participated in or even been in charge of several (seven) projects. I find great satisfaction in doing and completing these projects. These cherished experiences inspired me with great interest in optical research, and lay solid foundation for the further research. And also Optics is a promising subject. Optical storage and optical communication are very important to our future lives. 6. What's the difference between your major now and the major in USA? In fact they are the same. Maybe optical engineering is a little more engineering, and optics is a little more theoretical. 7. When/where did you get your BS/MS? What is your academic background? I got my Bachelor degree from the Department of Precision Instruments at Tsinghua University in July 2000. After 4 days, on July 9th, I will have my graduation ceremony, and at that time, I will get my Master degree from Tsinghua University. 8. What's the difference between your undergraduate major and graduate major ? My undergraduate major is Precision Instruments, Measurement and Control. And my graduate major is Optical Engineering. My undergraduate major has many aspects, and optical engineering is just one of them. So actually my graduate major is more specialized than my undergraduate major. 9. What/where are you studying now? I am now a graduate student in the Department of Precision Instrument s at Tsinghua University. And after 4 days, on July 9th, I will have my graduation ceremony, at that time; I will get my Master degree from Tsinghua University. 10. How long will you study in USA? The I-20 form says my duration of study will be 7 years. But actually the normal time is 6 years. And I think through my hard work, I can finish Ph.D. study within 5 years. 11. How do you know this Univ.? Why do you choose this Univ.? University of AAA is a very good university in USA. Especial its Institute of Optics gains high reputation in the optical research field. You know, it always ranks No. 1. The Institute of Optics has very great facilities , outstanding faculty and very strong research and education records. It is the best optical research center in the United States or even in the world. 12. Have you any scholarship? Yes. The Univ. offers me a Fellowship. This award will provide full-time tuition and annual maintenance. It can cover all the necessary expense in the United States. 13. Why do you receive financial aid from this Univ.? I think it is because of my past academic record and research work. The University thinks I am an excellent student and has great potential for doctoral research there. 14. When did you take the GRE/TOEFL test? I took my GRE test in December 2000, and I took my TOEFL test in May 2001. Show the materials. 15. Have you applied the universities indicated in your GRE report? What is the result? Why there is no University of AAA? Yes. I apply all the universities indicated in my GRE report. And Duke gives me an offer. The other three reject me. You know I took my GRE test 2 years ago, and at that time I didn't think the selection of universities that I want to study too much. I just consider the all over fame of the university. And when I applied the universities last year, I sent my GRE//TOEFL report to AAA. 16. How many universities have you applied? Which are they? How many admitted you? Which are they? I have applied 8 universities. They are MIT, Princeton, UC- Berkeley , Duke, Northwestern, AAA, Wisconsin-Madsin, Syracuse. 2 admissions and 2 offers. Duke and AAA admit me, and give me the full financial aids. Wisconsin-Madsin and Syracuse give me only admission. Two UK universities, Cambridge and Oxford. (只说admission,没有钱). 17. Why do you choose AAA instead of Duke? These two universities are both good universities, maybe Duke is more famous. But in the optical research field, AAA is the NO. 1, it is the best optical research center in the world. So compared with Duke, AAA is better. And you know, University of AAA is sited in a small quite city, I think it will be easy for me to concentrate on my study and research. 18. Why do you want to study in USA? Why not in other country? Why not in China? I applied two UK universities: Oxford and Cambridge. Both are the best universities in the world and give me admission. But they don't give me full financial aids. (Could you like to see the admission letters of the se two universities?) Other countries like German and France all have advanced technologies. But unfortunately I doesn't know Germany and French. 1. The United States really has the most leading science and technology, first-class facilities and many outstanding scientists in the world. So I think I can really learn advanced knowledge and do novel research. 2. The education and research systems of US universities will give me well training which will make me a mature researcher and benefit all my life. I think that in US I can broaden my eyes, and learn how the world-class researchers think, study and research. 3. The most important reason, to obtain a Ph.D. degree in a well-known foreign university is really necessary for me to realize my dream to be a professor in the top Chinese universities. Trust me. Now if you want to search a research position in those top China universities, especially in Tsinghua University or Peking University, you should have a Ph.D. degree of a foreign university. Or you can only be an assistant professor or an associate professor, hardly be a professor. And as the competition in China is tenser and tenser, and more and more students who are now studying abroad come back to China, this trend will be more obviously. And maybe it should be a Ph.D. degree of a FAMOUS foreign university. So I think that going to US to study for my Ph. D. degree could make me have more advantages in the future competition in China. It seems somewhat an investment. I spend several years on hard study and research, and I will gain my advantages in the future competition. I can easily pursue my Ph. D. Degree in Tsinghua University. Our research group is the best one in China. So I don't want pursue my Ph.D. degree in other Chinese Universities. And as I have done good research work in our lab, if I have not got such good opportunities to study abroad, my tutor will warmly welcome me to pursue my Ph.D. degree directly. Could you like to see the support letter of my tutor here? 19. Why do you want to pursue a doctor's degree? (抓住主要,提纲携领) First, I have interest to pursue my academic career. I have been doing research works on optics for more than 3 years since I was only a junior student. And I had some opportunities to exercise my knowledge. These cherished experiences inspired me with great interest in this area, also let me realize what I have learned is so limited. Now I know, if I want to be a top researcher in the optical fields, I should continuously get better education and training. From my perspective, the opportunity to be enrolled in AAA doctor program is a unique and invaluable one. I really want to continue to learn something. Second, to obtain a Ph.D. degree in a well-known foreign university is really necessary for me to realize my dream to be a professor in the top Chinese universities. I spend several years on hard study and research , and I will gain my advantages in the future competition. 20. What do you do with your work for Ph.D.? What will you do after graduation? What is your plan? After graduation, I will come back to China, and to be a core researcher in our optical research group at Tsinghua University. You know, Tsinghua University is getting to set up a new department named Department of Optical Information within 3 or 4 years. And our research group will be one part of this new department and there will be many opportunities to get research positions at that time. With my Ph.D. degree of Optics of AAA and my excellent research work, I am aiming to be a research professor in this new department soon after my back and set up my own lab. My research subject wil still focus optics, especially on optical storage and optical communication. I think these subjects are very promising, and there will be many works to be explored on them. 21. Are you certainly could find such a position in Tsinghua University? Why can you find such a position? Yes. I am sure. First, Tsinghua University now begins to set up a new department named Department of Optical Information, which is under the School of Information Science. This department will be made up with those major of physicaal optics, optical engineering and opto-electronics. And this department will be founded within 3 or 4 years and will have great opportunities to develop very fast. So when I graduate from AAA, it is just the time. Second, my tutor and other teachers in our research group warmly welcome these students who graduate from our group and then get a Ph.D. degree from a foreign university come back again and do research work in the group. Since the teachers of our research group are a little older, so our research group is really in great need of fresh blood. The leader of our research group is the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, BBBB. He has set up a plan providing attractive conditions to those students. And he has talked with me some days before and welcomed me back. Third, I have to say that though the research level here in Tsinghua University is the best in China, it is much lower than the world-class research level in the United States. So when I finish my study in the best optical research center in the world, I will get good training and could be a good researcher. My new idea, new knowledge together with my Ph.D. degree will be very competitive for me to get a position in Tsinghua. 22. How old is your tutor? How old is the academician? My tutor is 54 years old. And the academician is about 63 years old. He will not retire. 23. If you can't find such a position, how can you? I certainly can find such a position in Tshinghua University. The possibility of not being accepted is very very low. If this case really happens, I will find a research position in other famous university in China. You know I am from Zhejiang province, and my hometown is Hangzhou City. My uncle , Prof. CCCC is now the dean of School of Information Science at Zhejiang University, another well-known university in China. My uncle treats me as his own son, and always gives me suggestions on my career. I am sure if I can't get a research position in Tsinghua University, I can get it in Zhejiang University. 24. Give me three reasons that you will come back to China? Why will you come back to China? Why will you want to find a research position in China, not in US? You can get better salary and working condition in USA, why will you come back? 1. You know, life is not just a kind of job, but a career. One should not consider the situation nowadays, he should think of it carefully in a long term. Whether it can benefit for your future life I think is more important. Yes, I can get better salary and working condition in USA after I graduate. But I think, to my personal development, China is better. Now China is under development, and many fields need to be explored or developed. This may take several decades. So there are a lot of opportunities in China now and in the near future. And with my academic background, I can easily catch these opportunities and set up my own career in China. I can become a research professor in Tsinghua University, set up my own lab, and even like the professor of US universities, found my own enterprise. That's perfect. And here, I also can get high social status. A Professor of Tsinghua University with a Ph.D. degree of a foreign university will be respected not only in Beijing, but also in China. Now more and more student who have studied abroad come back to China, this trend is just correspond with the situation here. 2. On the other words, I don't agree with your words that "I will have better salary in US". You know, if you are really a good research, you will always get good salary everywhere. Now in Tsinghua University or Peking University the monthly incomes of most professors are no less than 8000 RMB, Including salary and other allowance. And since most of them have project funding, so actually they will lead nice lives. In our research group, there is a professor named DDD who was graduated from the University of AAA and came back to China 3 years ago. He is now the leading researcher on optical grating research. Because of his excellent work, he is honored as the Yangzi Scholar by the country and gets a research funding of 4 million RMB every year. And now he has the ambition to set up his own enterprise to occupy the optical grating market in China. 3. I have no advantages in the job market of US. Compared with those US citizens who also have PH.D. degree of a famous university, I really have no advantages to search a research position in a US university or research institute, or even have disadvantages. You know, now the competition of finding a position in a US university is really keen now. I've heard that in one university almost several hundreds of candidates just compete for one position. Oh, my God. And those big companies on optics just like Nortel and Lucent, now are firing thousands of their employees. So entering these big companies is not so easy. But in China, besides the opportunities here, I also have a lot of personal relationship. And this will greatly help me find a nice position with my strong academic background. This is my advantage. 4. I have deep emotion on Tsinghua University. Here I have spent the six golden years of my whole life. I have smiled and teared in this campus. Every tree, every road, every classroom I am so familiar with. So many unforgettable memories. I will miss these days and no other place can take place of Tsinghua in my heart. So after graduation, I really want to come back to my lovely campus. (煽煽情) 25. What will be your salary when you come back? What is the salary of the professor of your research group? Do they all come back from abroad? Now in Tsinghua University or Peking University the monthly incomes of most professors are no less than 8000 RMB, Including salary and other allowance. And since most of them have project funding, so actually they will lead nice lives. So I will also have a nice life after I come back to China. There are three young professors in our research group, all of them come back from abroad. One is the Ph.D. of Stanford, one is the Ph.D . of AAA, and the other is the Ph.D. of University of Arizona. 26. Can you explain why 90% Chinese students didn't come back? I don't know the exact rate. I think you figure may be the figure of some years ago. As the latest statistical report says, more than one third of Chinese students has come back. And with the development of China, the government provides a lot of favorable policy to attract the oversea students, such as position, salary, research fund, research facility and so on. he trend of coming back is becoming more and more popular. As for me, I am sure I will have a much more promising future in China, so I will definitely come back. 27. What is job of your parents? My parents are both employees of Chinese government. They all deal with the financial affairs. 28. If I can't give you your visa, what will you do? First I will very regret to hear this news. You may make me lose this good opportunity. And then if possible, I will apply it again. From my perspective, the opportunity to be enrolled in AAA is a unique and invaluable one. I really want to learn something and make myself more competitive. 抓住继续要搞研究的主题。无法坚持后,最后可以说一下,可以去别的 国家拿学位。 29. What is the difficult class do you have? And the favorite class? Fiber Optics. Though the content of this class is not much, but in fact the topic of this class is very wide and fast developing. My favorite class is Optical Information Process. 30. The most famous researcher on my field is Emil Wolf. He is the founder of Modern Optics and the author of Principle of Optics. He is now in the University of AAA. My favorite movie is The Graduate. My favorite singer is Michael Bolton. His song "Said I love you, but I lie" is my favorite. My favorite movie star is Tom Cruise. He is handsome. He is divorced. The movie is Mission: Impossible. (谍中谍) My favorite book is 三国演义.... As a well-educated and polite person, you should not interrupt my words.
