Community colleges, formerly known as junior colleges, are 2-year higher education institutions that provide postsecondary courses leading to certificate and associate degree as a pathway to a four-year degree. Kentucky is home to a variety of community colleges that provide students with excellent educational opportunities. The largest community college in the state is Jefferson Community and Technical College, which has four campuses located throughout the state. At Jefferson Community and Technical College, students can choose from a wide selection of programs and courses such as business, healthcare, technology, and engineering. Other popular schools in the state include Somerset Community College and Madisonville Community College.

Somerset Community College offers associate’s degrees in fields such as nursing, business administration, computer science, and criminal justice. Madisonville Community College offers associate’s degrees in areas like psychology and sociology as well as bachelor’s degrees in education and social work. Both schools also offer online classes for those who cannot make it to campus for traditional classes. In addition to these two main schools, there are many other smaller community colleges throughout Kentucky that provide quality education at an affordable cost. These schools often provide students with a great foundation to prepare them for further study or to jumpstart their career. Additionally, some of these community colleges have transfer agreements with four-year universities so students can easily transfer credits earned at the community college towards a four-year degree program. Furthermore, many of these schools have articulation agreements with other two-year institutions so students can transfer credits more easily between them than they could between a two-year school and a four-year university.
