Community colleges, formerly known as junior colleges, are 2-year higher education institutions that provide postsecondary courses leading to certificate and associate degree as a pathway to a four-year degree. Maryland is home to a wide variety of community colleges which offer students the opportunity to obtain an associate degree, diploma, or certificate in a variety of fields. The Maryland Community College System (MCCS) is made up of 15 campuses located throughout the state, offering programs in fields such as healthcare, business administration, engineering technology and more. These campuses also offer specialized training in areas such as welding, automotive technology, HVAC systems installation and repair and computer information systems.

The MCCS also offers a range of transferable college credits that can be used to pursue a bachelor’s degree at one of Maryland’s four-year colleges or universities. Additionally, many of the community colleges in Maryland have agreements with local employers for internships and apprenticeships that allow students to gain valuable work experience while still earning college credit. These opportunities enable students to gain real-world experience while exploring potential career paths before committing to a full-time job or furthering their studies at a four-year institution.

In addition to traditional course offerings, many of the community colleges in Maryland offer online courses for those who prefer to learn remotely from any location with an internet connection. These courses range from basic office skills to specialized information technology training. There are also numerous online degrees available through the MCCS which allow students to complete their studies remotely from any location with an internet connection. Online degrees include Associate Degrees in Applied Science and Business Administration as well as Certificate Programs such as Computer Aided Design (CAD).
