According to ejiaxing, Coffey County, Kansas is a rural county located in the eastern part of the state. The county was originally established in 1855 and named after Colonel James A. Coffey, a veteran of the Mexican-American War. The county was initially home to Native American tribes such as the Osage, Pawnee and Quapaw before being settled by settlers from Ohio and other eastern states looking for a new start in life. The first town established in Coffey County was Burlington, which was founded in 1859. This town quickly became the county seat and remains so today. Today, coffey County is primarily an agricultural region with crops such as corn, wheat and soybeans being grown throughout its rolling hillsides. In addition to agriculture, there are also several businesses that provide goods or services to those who live within or visit Coffey County including restaurants and retail stores along with various medical facilities located throughout its seven cities: Burlington, Gridley Le Roy New Strawn Waverly Westphalia White Cloud. Coffey County, Kansas is served by two school districts: Burlington Community USD 244 and Southern Coffey County USD 286. Both districts are located in the county seat of Burlington, and have a combined enrollment of over 1,600 students in grades K-12. The Burlington Community USD 244 school district was established in 1859 and serves the communities of Burlington, Gridley, Le Roy, New Strawn and White Cloud. The district operates four schools: Burlington High School (grades 9-12), LeRoy Junior High School (grades 6-8), Gridley Elementary School (grades 3-5) and White Cloud Primary School (K-2). In addition to its core academic programs, the district also offers a variety of extracurricular activities including sports teams, music programs and student clubs. The Southern Coffey County USD 286 school district serves the communities of Waverly and Westphalia. The district operates two schools: Waverly High School (grades 9-12) and Westphalia Elementary School (K-8). This district also offers a variety of extracurricular activities including sports teams, music programs and student clubs. Both school districts strive to provide quality education for all students in Coffey County.
