According to ejiaxing, DeSoto Parish, Louisiana is a small rural parish located in the northwest corner of the state. The parish was established in 1843 and named after Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. The area was first settled by French colonists in 1719 and later by American settlers who arrived in the early 1800s. The main industry of DeSoto Parish during its early history was cotton farming and lumber production. The parish also had several sawmills that were used to process lumber for export to other parts of the state and country. During the Civil War, many of these mills were destroyed, but they were rebuilt after the war ended. In 1880, oil was discovered near Logansport, which led to an oil boom in DeSoto Parish. This boom brought a wave of new residents to the area and spurred economic growth throughout the parish. In 1905, Stonewall Jackson College (now Northwestern State University) opened its doors to students in Natchitoches, providing educational opportunities for many DeSoto Parish residents. In recent years, DeSoto Parish has become known as a great place to live and work with a variety of businesses operating across multiple industries including healthcare, retail, finance, food service and more. In addition to these businesses there are also several historical sites located within DeSoto Parish including Fort Jesup State Historic Site; Beech Grove Cemetery which dates back to 1820; and several antebellum homes that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. DeSoto Parish is served by two public school districts: the DeSoto Parish School District and the Mansfield Independent School District. Both districts provide a comprehensive educational experience for students in grades pre-K through 12th grade, offering a variety of courses, extracurricular activities, and support services.
