It was first settled by Europeans in 1761 when a group of settlers from Connecticut arrived in the region. In the late 19th century, mining and lumbering were two of the most important industries in the county. Logging camps were built throughout Essex County to harvest timber for use as fuel and building materials. Mines were also opened to extract iron ore, copper ore, zinc ore, graphite, talc, asbestos and other minerals from beneath the surface of the land. The area also had a thriving agricultural sector during this time period; dairy farms became increasingly common throughout Essex County during the early 20th century as demand for dairy products grew across New York State. Additionally, small family farms grew fruits such as apples and cherries that could be sold at local markets or shipped around New York State or even farther abroad. Today, much of Essex County is still rural with many small towns dotting its landscape. Many of these towns are popular tourist destinations due to their historic buildings; quaint shops; outdoor activities such as biking or hiking; and other attractions like museums or wineries. Despite its rural nature however, there are some larger cities scattered throughout Essex County such as Lake Placid which hosts many sporting events including Olympic competitions every four years.
