According to ejiaxing, Carteret County, North Carolina is located in the coastal plain of the southeastern United States. It is bordered by Onslow County to the north, Craven County to the east, Pamlico Sound and Beaufort County to the south, and Jones County to the west. The county seat is Beaufort, which was incorporated in 1722. The area that makes up Carteret County was first inhabited by Native Americans who were part of the Algonquian language family. These tribes included the Coree, Neusiok, Bear River, and Croatan tribes. In 1584, English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh sent a group of colonists to explore and settle in this area. The settlement was abandoned shortly thereafter due to conflict with Native Americans and lack of supplies. In 1663, King Charles II granted a charter that allowed eight noblemen to settle what is now Carteret County. This group became known as “Lord Proprietors” and they established several settlements including Beaufort (named for Henry Somerset), Bath (named for Lady Elizabeth Bath), Pamlico (named for an Indian chief), Port Royal (named for King Charles II) and more. In 1712 these settlements combined together to form what was then known as Carteret Precinct. Throughout its history Carteret County has been home to numerous industries including shipbuilding, fishing, timber harvesting and more recently tourism. It has also been home to many notable individuals such as former U.S Senator Jesse Helms Jr., author Nicholas Sparks, musician/composer Randy Newman and many others who have made significant contributions both locally and nationally throughout their lives. Today, Carteret County is still home to vibrant communities such as Beaufort which serves as its county seat; Atlantic Beach which boasts miles of beaches; Morehead City which hosts numerous festivals throughout the year; Emerald Isle known for its beautiful beaches; Cedar Island which offers a peaceful atmosphere; Newport which serves as a gateway between inland areas of North Carolina and coastal areas; Cape Lookout National Seashore where visitors can explore miles of pristine beaches; Harkers Island which features a local seafood industry; Ocracoke Island with its rich pirate history; plus many other small towns that offer something unique in terms of culture or industry throughout this historic county in North Carolina’s coastal plain region.
