Established in 1785, Darlington County was originally part of Cheraw District and then Marlboro District. The county was named for Samuel Dargan who was a Revolutionary War soldier and a prominent landowner in the area. The first settlers of Darlington County were mostly small farmers from Scotland, England and Ireland who settled around Society Hill. These early settlers raised cotton, tobacco, corn, wheat and other crops that became the foundation of Darlington County’s economy. The area also had an abundance of timber which led to sawmills being established throughout the county. In the mid 1800s, Darlington County experienced significant growth due to its position along two major railroad lines; The Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line Railway. This new access to transportation made it possible for businesses to move into the area and helped create jobs for local residents. This period also saw an influx of African Americans who came as slaves or free people seeking better opportunities in Darlington County. By the early 1900s, Darlington County had become a major center for textile production with many mills located throughout the county.
