According to ejiaxing, Darlington County, South Carolina is located in the northeastern part of the state and is home to over 68,000 people. Established in 1785, Darlington County was originally part of Cheraw District and then Marlboro District. The county was named for Samuel Dargan who was a Revolutionary War soldier and a prominent landowner in the area. The first settlers of Darlington County were mostly small farmers from Scotland, England and Ireland who settled around Society Hill. By the early 1900s, Darlington County had become a major center for textile production with many mills located throughout the county. During this time African Americans were able to find employment at many local mills as well as on farms throughout the county. In addition, several educational institutions were established during this period including a college and several high schools for both black and white students. Today, Darlington County is still home to numerous textile mills but has diversified its economy by adding industries such as automotive manufacturing, food processing as well as healthcare services among others. In addition to its strong industrial base, it is also known for its rich cultural heritage which includes historic sites such as Revolutionary War battlefields as well as museums dedicated to African American history and culture in the region. The district is comprised of 19 schools, including 15 elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools.
